Enrolment
If you want to continue your previously study programme or change to another Danish University, you might be eligible for applying for enrolment. It is a requirement that you have passed the first year of study (60 ECTS). ?If you are granted credit transfer for the entire first academic year of a study programme, you can apply for admission to one of these study places. Technically, this application procedure is called ‘enrolment’.
You can only apply for enrolment if you:
- Currently are enrolled at Aalborg University or another Danish university
- Previously has been enrolled on the same programme at Aalborg University or the same programme at another Danish university
This means that if you currently are enrolled at a foreign University, and have not previously been enrolled at a Danish University, you cannot apply for enrollment. If you do not meet one of these conditions, you have to apply for ordinary admission to?the programme in question.
Please note that the programmes at Aalborg University only has few available study places on semesters after the first year of study. This means that you are not guaranteed a place even though you meet the requirements.
Below you find the conditions for enrolment that applies to Bachelor students:
- You must have passed examinations, which count as credit towards at least the first year of the study programme to which you apply for enrolment. This means that you must be able to begin your studies on the third semester or on later semesters of the Bachelor's programme. If you are not eligible to be awarded credit for at least the first year, you must apply for a study place on the first year of study via the Coordinated Admission System. If you are uncertain whether you are eligible for credit transfer for the entire first year of the study programme, we recommend that you apply through both systems. We kindly ask you to state this in your enclosures.
- A study place must be available on the semester to which you apply for enrolment.
- You must meet the general admission requirements, including our language requirements.
- You must meet the admission requirements for the Bachelor’s programme.
- Are you applying for enrolment on the exact same programme, which you previously has been enrolled at, you cannot be enrolled less than 5 months after you have been unenrolled.
- You will be enrolled on the newest and valid curriculum, which means that there might be a change in the admission requirements. ?
Previously unenrolled?
If you have been unenrolled by Aalborg University from the same programme to which you are applying for enrolment, Aalborg University has to assess whether you significantly improved your chances of completing the programme or if the programme has significantly changed.
Please note that the rules about improved chances of completing the programme also applies if you have cancelled your studies yourself at a time where the univeristy could have unenrolled you the basis of the above-mentioned?rules.
You have to apply for an exemption to be re-enrolled, if one of the following applies to you:
- You have used up the number of examination attempts or has been unenrolled due to lack of study activity
- You have been permanent dismissed?

If you have been unenrolled by the university from the same programme to which you are applying for enrollment, Aalborg University has to assess whether you significantly has improved your chances of completing the programme. You must upload the documentation in the Application Portal. ?
You must upload the following:
- A statement explaining for the reason/reasons that your previously enrollment was canceled
- A statement explaining how your opportunities for finishing the Master’s programme has been significantly improved or an explanation of how the programmes content has been significantly changed
- Documentation proving that your opportunities for finishing the Master’s programme has been significantly improved or documentation proving that the programmes content has been significantly changed
The mentioned documentation can be in the form of:
- A doctor’s note proving that you during your previously enrollment was significantly affected by long-term illness, which no longer affects you
- Passed courses or education that significantly improved your qualifications
- Employment contract in combination with an employers statement that documents that you have achieved working experience, which significantly improved your opportunities of completing the programme
- New and previously curriculum which documents that the programme significantly has changed its content on one or more ways, which are relevant for your application for reenrollment
If the number of qualified applicants exceeds the number of available study places and if the individual study programme has not stipulated other selection criteria, all applicants will be admitted on the basis of their grade point average. For applicants applying for enrolment to a Bachelor's programme, the assessment will be based on the grade point average of their upper secondary education. For applicants applying for enrolment to a Master's programme, the assessment will be based on the grade point average of their Bachelor's degree.
You are obliged under Danish legislation to state and apply for credit transfer for all passed courses from previously studies at the same level.?

You must upload the following documentation:
- A copy of your qualifying entry examination (if you are applying for enrollment on a Bachelor’s programme).
- Bachelor’s degree diploma (if you are applying for enrollment on a Master’s programme).
- Copies of other relevant documents, such as documentation of your Danish or English language skills.
- Copies of your student record, completed study activities or copies of any previously approved credit transfer.
- Application for an exemption (If you have been unenrolled by the university from the same programme to which you are applying for enrolment.
Choose the correct offer type
Please make sure to choose the correct technical term in the box ‘offer type'?in the Application Portal:
‘Study change/Transfer – Bachelor’ = Applying for a Bachelor’s programme ?- based on previous activities in a Bachelor’s programme.
‘Study change/transfer – Master’ = Applying for?a Master’s programme – based on previous activities in a Master’s programme.?

If you are applying for enrolment to a?Bachelor's programme you must also upload a verification form, in order for?us to?assess your educational background.?Applicants from Scandinavia are not required to enclose a verification form.

The application fee is 780 DKK (105?EUR). One application fee covers all applications to Aalborg University for the specific intake.
When you have completed the payment, you will receive a receipt to your email. Please?upload the receipt to all your applications in?the?Application portal.
We will refund the application fee?if you are admitted and begin your studies at Aalborg University. The refund will always be reimbursed?to the credit card you used in application?fee webshop.

Exemptions for paying application fee
- A Danish permanent residence permit.
- A Danish residence permit with the possibility of a permanent residency.
- A temporary Danish residence permit with a view to temporary residence in Denmark after the Danish Aliens Act, Consolidation section 7 (1 and 2), and section 8 (1 and 2).
- A Danish temporary residence permit with a view to temporary residence permit after the Danish Aliens Act, Consolidation section 9 (1, or section 9 c (1) as a result of a familiar association to a foreign with a residence permit after section 7 (1 and 2) or section 8 (1 and 2)
- A Danish residence permit after the Danish Aliens Act, Consolidation section 9 m as an accompanying child of a foreign, who hold a residence permit based on employment etc. after the Danish Aliens Act, Consolidation section 9 a.
Students from outside EU/EEA are required to pay tuition fees in order to study at Aalborg University unless you hold one of the residence permits mentioned below.
Tuition fee covers expenses related to lectures, guidance, supervision and exams. In case you do not pass a course you are eligible for two re-examinations.

Refund policy
If a student wishes to withdraw from Aalborg University prior to the commencement of studies the paid tuition fee will be refunded in full. If a student withdraws from Aalborg University within the first month of the semester, i.e. February in regards to the spring semester and September in regards to the autumn semester, only part of the tuition fee will be refunded. However, if the student withdraws from Aalborg University later than one month after the commencement of studies the student will not be eligible for a refund.
Exemptions for paying application fee
You are exempt from paying tution fee if you hold?one of the following Danish residence permits:
- A permanent residence permit
- A residence permit with the possibility of a permanent residency.
- A temporary residence permit with a view to temporary residence in Denmark after the Danish Aliens Act, Consolidation section 7 (1 and 2), and section 8 (1 and 2).
- A temporary residence permit with a view to temporary residence permit after the Danish Aliens Act, Consolidation section 9 (1, or section 9 c (1) as a result of a familiar association to a foreign with a residence permit after section 7 (1 and 2) or section 8 (1 and 2)

Exchange students from partner universities outside EU/EEA will not be charged tuition fees.
You may receive a response to your application shortly before the semester start date. We cannot say how many study places will be available on the third and later semesters, until we know how many students will enrol in their first year of study; therefore, you will most likely receive the response just before the semester start date.?
Credit Transfer
If you have completed any degree programme elements (courses) previously, you may be eligible for credit transfer. Credit transfer will be awarded if the study board of your programme considers your previously acquired skills to be equivalent to skills students will acquire in specific courses of the programme. If you are awarded credit transfer, you cannot?take the course in question and this may therefore shorten the time you need to study at Aalborg University.?
If you have acquired skills at a similar level and with similar content through previously uncompleted study activities, you must inform Aalborg University of this when you apply for admission to a Bachelor’s or Master’s programme at Aalborg University. You must apply for credit transfer at the same time.
Bachelor's programmes
If you wish to apply for enrolment on the third semester or later semesters of a study programme because you expect to have credit transferred for the entire first year of study, you must apply for enrolment through?the application portal. This application procedure is called ‘enrolment’.
If you are uncertain whether you are eligible for credit transfer for the entire first year of the study programme, we recommend that you both apply for admission to the first year of the study programme (via?www.optagelse.dk) and apply for enrolment on the third semester or later semesters of the study programme (via?the application portal). We kindly ask you to inform us of this in your enclosures.
Master's programmes
If you wish to apply for enrolment on the second or third year of a master programme because you expect to have credit transferred for the entire first year of study, you must apply for enrolment through?the?application portal. This application procedure is called ‘enrolment’.
If you are uncertain whether you are eligible for credit transfer for the entire first year of the Master's programme, we recommend that you both apply for admission to the first year of the study programme (also via?the application portal; however, note that that the procedure is different from admission) as wells as for enrolment into the second year.
The Danish?application portal?does not accept applications after the application deadline. If you have already applied, and it turns out that you must apply through a different application procedure, you will not be able to re-apply once the deadline has expired.
An application for credit transfer must always consist of a brief explanation and include documentation in the form of a copy of your study journal and a copy of the curriculum of your previous studies. The application for credit transfer must be included as an appendix to your application for admission to a study programme, and you must upload it when completing your application for admission to a? Bachelor’s or Master’s programme.?
The Admissions Office will forward your application for credit transfer to the study board of the programme in question; the study board will then assess your application. You will not be notified of the result of the credit transfer assessment until late in the application process, possibly after your application for admission has been processed.?
As a rule, if credit transfer is awarded, applicants must still meet the formal admission requirements of the study programme in order to be admitted, i.e. Danish proficiency for Danish-taught programmes and English proficiency for English-taught programmes. You will find the admission requirements in the detailed descriptions of AAU study programmes here.
If you meet the admission requirements and are awarded credit transfer, you still cannot be certain that you will receive an offer of a study place. Most study places at programmes with restricted admission will be offered to students in their first year of the Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes. Only few places are available in the semesters following the first year of programmes with restricted admission.
If you wish to know whether you may be eligible for credit transfer before you apply for admission to a study programme, you may request a credit transfer assessment. Check the website of the study programme to see whether the programme offers credit transfer assessments in advance. However, please note that most programmes at Aalborg University only process applications for credit transfer from students who are already admitted. If you would like to have an indication of your opportunities for credit transfer, you can also contact the student counsellor of the programme. Please note that only the study board can make a formal credit transfer assessment – a student counsellor can merely inform you of the general guidelines for credit transfer.?
If you already are a student at AAU and you plan to study abroad, you may be eligible for credit transfer. It may be a good idea to apply for pre-approval of credit transfer. Successfully completed programme elements that have been pre-approved will replace the course(s) of your AAU study programme for which you were awarded pre-approved credit transfer. This means that a pre-approved stay abroad will not extend your studies at AAU. When you return from your stay abroad, you must forward documentation for having completed the programme elements.
When you apply for pre-approval of credit transfer, you must include a study plan proposal for your stay abroad. If your study board has granted you pre-approved credit transfer for a course which is later cancelled, you should select an alternative course, and your study board may be able to award the pre-approved credit transfer for this instead.
If you are already a student at AAU and you plan to enrol in a minor subject (gymnasiesidefag) or an elective subject at another university in Denmark, please note that the study board of your current programme at AAU must pre-approve of studies at another university.?
If you disagree with the study board’s decision regarding your application for credit transfer, you may submit an appeal to the University’s Credit Appeals Board (credit transfers based on study activities from Danish institutions) or the Qualifications Board (credit transfers based on non-Danish study activities). You will find detailed information on when and how you may submit an appeal in the letter you have received from your study board informing you of their decision.
Change of study programme
If you wish to change within the very first days, you need to re-apply in the second application round via an application found on?www.aau.dk?(Bachelor’s programmes) or via?the application portal?(Master’s programmes).
You must meet the entry requirements for the specific programme.
If no vacant places are available,? you will not be able to change.
Applicants for vacant places apply on equal terms. We do not give priority to students previously or currently enrolled in a programme at Aalborg university.?
Vacant places will be announced on these sites.
If you wish to change programmes during the first year, you must re-apply for admission through www.optagelse.dk (Bachelor’s programmes) or the application portal (Master’s programmes) the following spring (for the September intake).
You must meet the entry requirements for the specific programme. However, meeting the entry requirements is no guarantee of enrolment, since many programmes have restricted admission. If you receive an offer of enrolment, a credit transfer based on your previous studies might be an option.

If you can achieve a full credit transfer for at least the first two semesters of the programme you wish to change to, you need to apply via the application portal.

Please note that it is only possible to change your choice of specialisation within the same study programme if you have not used any examination attempts and/or passed any modules on your original choice of specialisation. Additionally, there has to be free study places on the specialisation you wish to switch to.

Any change of programmes requires an application via www.optagelse.dk or the application portal. The Admissions Office at Aalborg University processes all applications regarding enrolment. Your study secretary or the exam office will not be able to change your enrolment.?
Minor subject/elective courses as an AAU student
If you are a current students at AAU and wish to study a minor subject ("gymnasie-sidefag"), you have to apply via the Application Portal.
