Academic Content & Study Environment

Language and International Studies, English is a mid-sized program in which students begin with courses and projects organized around international history, followed by a focus on language, politics and society, then international relations, then intercultural studies, then international organizations. Emphasizing group-work and close contact within student cohorts, that is supplemented by work in areas emphasizing central concepts in the humanities and social sciences, political philosophy, international human rights, policy studies, and electives from migration to corporate social responsibility. LISE (Language and International Studies, English) students can study abroad during the 4th and 5th semesters. There is an active social life—LISE features its own student organization—students can participate in AAU’s Global Graduate Programme. Every academic year features guest lectures from embassies, NGOs, and other international organisations.

In fall 2024, LISE has begun a systematic cooperation in an “Organisations Week” with relevant actors to bring students into hands-on contact with material for their project work.

Study Abroad

The programme has many agreements with universities abroad offering opportunities for study abroad (again, in either the 4th or 5th semesters). Students can also go abroad as free movers to universities outside of AAU’s exchange agreements.

You will still receive a state education grant (SU) during your semester abroad. The programme assists considerations around the academic dimension of the stay, and Aalborg University’s International Office has many years of experience in sending students on study or internships abroad. You may also apply for AAU grants via the office.

The Language and International Studies, English bachelor's program endowed me with a comprehension of international affairs and contemporary global history, laying the foundation for my career. Its comprehensive curriculum provided insight into international relations, conflict, social affairs, and intercultural communication. LISE's broad overview prepared me to navigate our ever-evolving world with discernment. Since graduating from LISE, I have worked in the Danish foreign service on diplomatic missions to the UAE and Saudi Arabia and now holding the position of Head of Section in the Danish Immigration Service besides serving as board member of the Danish Foreign Policy Society U35. I recommend the program to students with aspirations of working in international affairs.
